Otar Chiladze

Poet, Fiction Writer, Playwright

Otar Chiladze was born on 20 March 1933, in Sighnaghi and died on October 1, 2009. In 1956, he graduated from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, the faculty of philology with the major in journalism. He worked at the journal “Tsiskari” (1958-1964). He was the committee secretary of Shota Rustaveli State Prize (1964-1973), an editor-in-chief of the journal “Soviet Art” (1973-1981), a secretary of Georgian Writers’ Union (1981-1987). Otar Chiladze was a Professor from 1997 and supervised a course in dramaturgy at Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film State University. In addition, he was an editor-in-chief of the journal “Mnatobi” since 1997.

His first verses appeared in 1952 in almanac “Pirveli Skhhivi” (First Ray) and his first poetic collection “Trains and Passengers” in 1959. Many of his books have been published since then.
